Placenta Encapsulation

Frequently asked questions

  • How will my placenta get to you after birth?

I will meet your friend, partner, companion or family member in the designated area we have agreed upon at the hospital.

  • How should I store my placenta after birth?

Your placenta should be in a leakproof container or two in ziplock bags and it must be refrigerated or on ice within 4 hours of birth. I can provide bags & cooler if needed.

  • What do I tell my care team?

You will need to discuss with your provider prior to birth (if possible) to understand your hospitals policies. You may need to remind your nurses & provider a few times before & after birth that you are wanting to keep your placenta.

  • How many capsules should I expect?

Every placenta is varies in size which determines the amount of capsules you will get. The amount can range from 100-150 capsules.

  • When is it not safe to encapsulate?

I will not encapsulate your placenta if you have smoked during pregnancy, the placenta was transferred to pathology (cross contamination), signs of maternal infection & Chorioamnionitis (Can be tested to be sure)

  • Can I still have my placenta encapsulated if I have GBS, placenta came into contact with maternal feces or meconium?

Yes. Submerging the placenta in an undiluted vinegar bath and steaming will kill any bacteria present.

  • What are the risks?

You should do your own research to determine if this is right for you. The risks can include jitteriness & anxiety. Capsules should not be taken late in the day.

  • How long will my capsules stay good?

All capsules should be stored at room temperature out of direct sunlight for the first 2 weeks. Transfer remaining capsules & dehumidifying packet to a ziplock freezer bag & place in the freezer for up to 12 months.

  • What is the difference between Raw Encapsulation and the Gentle Method?

The Gentle Method is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) inspired. It exposes the placenta to heat (Steamed) which can kill any possible bacteria. This is the method recommend if mom has any history with anxiety. The Raw Method is when the placenta is only dehydrated, not steamed. Consuming the placenta raw has shown to give moms a major energy boost. Raw encapsulation gives you almost double the capsules, however, they are more potent than capsules from the Gentle Method.
